Os Agasalhos
É no final da tarde de quarta-feira que os preparativos para a feira semanal na cidade de Barcelos começam. Altura em que o largo da República, o conhecido “campo da feira”, lentamente se vai alterando.
Daí por diante, e ainda com carros estacionados o espaço começa a ser palco de inúmeras performances realizadas pelos feirantes.
Os primeiros a chegar são os feirantes mais antigos dos legumes. Posicionam mastro de ferro no centro da sua área, martelam estacas, puxam algumas cordas, posicionam os toldos no topo das estruturas e amarram-nos ainda por esticar. Para fazer a banca colocam alguns cestos, dispõem uma ou outra tábua para fazer dois níveis e organizam os caixotes (alguns já com legumes). Por baixa das bancas reservam uns embrulhos extras, alguns metros de plásticos, guarda-sois, redes de sombra, para caso seja preciso proteger as verduras no dia seguinte. O seguro morreu de velho, menina!, dizia-me uma feirante.
It is late Wednesday afternoon that preparations for the weekly fair in the city of Barcelos begin. A time when the space slowly changes.
From then on, and with cars still parked in Largo da República, known as the fairgrounds, the space began to be the stage for countless performances carried out by stallholders.
The first to arrive are the oldest vegetable vendors. They position an iron mast in the center of their area, hammer in stakes, pull some ropes, position the awnings on top of the structures and tie them up while still unstretched. To make the stand, place some baskets, arrange a board or two to make two levels and organize the crates (some already with vegetables). Under the stalls they reserve some extra packages, a few meters of plastic, umbrellas, shade nets, in case it is necessary to protect the vegetables the next day. Insurance is old, girl, a market vendor told me.
Quando estiver tudo montado embrulham a banca bem embrulhada com toldos, panos, plásticos. Tudo muito bem apertado com algumas voltas de cordas e uma meia dúzia de laçadas.
When everything is assembled, wrap the stall well with awnings, cloths, plastic. Everything is very well tightened with a few turns of rope and half a dozen loops.
Depois os que têm a tendas da fruta maiores. Vêm de camião e demoram para lá de três horas a montar tudo. Discretamente com o avançar da hora começam-se a juntar carrinhas, ouvem-se marteladas aqui e acolá e à medida que escurece o zumbido das conversas intensifica-se.
Ouve-se falar acerca das notícias mais recentes: do futebol, da política local, das previsões do tempo para o dia seguinte… E entre um e outro tema ouvem-se coisas do género: Ao terceiro, quinto e sexto depois do Manel ou Estico ao Pérola e ao hospital.
Como códigos estas expressões norteiam os movimentos de cada feirante. Dizia-me um dos feirantes que há rituais que se devem respeitar e fazer religiosamente. Como a ordem com a qual se montam as diferentes componentes das estruturas, onde se amarram as cordas, para que lado vão esticar primeiro os toldosas, os “caimentos” que devem ter.
Then those with larger fruit stalls. They come by truck and take more than three hours to assemble everything. Discreetly as the hour progresses, vans begin to gather, hammering is heard here and there and as it gets darker the hum of conversations intensifies.
You hear talking about the most recent news: football, local politics, weather forecasts for the next day… And between one topic and another you hear things like this: To the third, fifth and sixth after Manel or I reach out to Pérola and the hospital.
Like codes, these expressions guide the movements of each stallholder. One of the stallholders told me that there are rituals that must be respected and carried out religiously. Such as the order in which the different components of the structures are assembled, where the ropes are tied, which way the awnings will be stretched first, the “fit” they must have.
Com o passar da hora outras estruturas vão povoando o espaço. E assim o campo da feira adormece já com algumas tendas e bancas (quase) montadas e muito bem agasalhadas…
As time passes, other structures populate the space. And so the fairgrounds fall asleep with some tents and stalls (almost) set up and very well covered…
